Rev. Charles Mathews
Rev. Charles Mathews is the pastor of Holland Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church in Apex, NC.
His pathway to ministry was clearly defined when at the age of 15, just four years after getting baptized, Charles’ mother suddenly died of breast cancer. This psychological trauma almost aborted his faith. However, God had other plans.
Shortly thereafter, with the divine guidance of the Holy Spirit and encouraging family members, Charles discovered his calling to aid those who were neglected, ostracized, and abandoned.
He served as an armor bearer, usher, and Sunday school teacher. He had the honor of serving as praise and worship leader and developed a unique niche in music and marketing. Years later he accepted his call into the ministry of Zion and preached his trial sermon in April of 2007 at Mt. Olive AME Zion Church.
His education accomplishments consist of a Sports Science degree at UNC-Chapel Hill and a Bachelors of Science in Nursing at North Carolina Central University (NCCU), where he graduated cum laude. In 2018, he graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Masters of Divinity at Hood Theological Seminary. The following year in 2019 Bishop Monroe ordained him elder. His former pastorates include Terrells Chapel AMEZ of Pittsboro, NC and Union Grove AMEZ of Bear Creek, NC.
Besides his vocation he is Clinical Specialist of Biosense Webster, Johnson & Johnson specializing in Cardiology managing clinician training in North Carolina hospitals that include Duke, UNC, and Wakemed to name a few.
Last but certainly not least he is married to his high school sweetheart, Renita Garrison with two beautiful children Taylor and Nyla Mathews.
An ambitious Man of God, purposed for a High Calling, Charles Mathews’ spiritual, personal, and professional journeys are inspirational and exemplary of humility, leadership, and steadfastness.
