THE REV. Dr. ORLANDO DOWDY
The Rev. Dr. Dowdy is the Pastor of the Holland Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church where he has served as the pastoral leader since July 2010. While at Holland Chapel he has lead them in the establishment of a 501c3 nonprofit ministry, Spreading Hope, Inc. He and the congregation are active in health and wellness, social activism/political, prison, nursing home, homeless, feeding and other ministries.
While pastoring in Fayetteville, N.C. Dr. Dowdy was honored as being one of the very few clergy in the history of Fayetteville to receive the key to the city. He is a former City of Fayetteville police officer (SWAT) and a retired military officer.
Professionally he has served as adjunct professor at the Mount Olive College for four years where he taught undergraduates the Old and New Testaments and Ethics. He is the chairman for the Durham District Course of Study and for a decade has served as a Conference Examiner for the Central North Carolina Annual Conference and an Instructor for the Eastern North Carolina Episcopal District of the AME Zion Church. He also teaches at the Denominational or National / International Levels.
Dr. Dowdy is a clinically trained and board certified practicing psychotherapist and pastoral counselor. He has worked at Alamance Regional Medical Center in Burlington, NC and Triangle Pastoral Counseling in Raleigh, NC. In 2013 Dr. Dowdy went into private practice and opened Dowdy Psychotherapy, LLC in Durham, NC.
Educationally Dr. Dowdy studied at East Carolina University, North Carolina A & T State University and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice from Shaw University, a Master of Divinity degree from Duke Divinity School, and a Doctor of Ministry degree in Psychotherapy / Pastoral Care and Counseling from the Graduate Theological Foundation, at South Bend, Indiana (also Oxford, England and Rome, Italy). While in seminary Dr. Dowdy was selected as one of the few rising leaders among seminarians at Duke to join other seminarians and lay persons from various seminaries and locations around the country to go on a three week Middle Eastern Travel Seminar in six countries.
Dr. Dowdy is married to Marie Dowdy and they have three children; twin daughters Jamie (husband Joe) and Rachin (husband Donnie), one son, Jamal, and one granddaughter, Nakiyah.
